Planning a round trip through Morocco and full of questions? Here we answer the 15 questions our guests ask most often: short, honest and with real numbers. We are Med Marokko Reisen, a local team based in Marrakech, and we have organised private tours with our own drivers since 2015.
Duration and route
1. How many days do you need for a Morocco tour?
For a first trip with the imperial cities and the Sahara, 8 to 10 days are ideal. If you only want to see the desert from Marrakech, you need at least 3 days: Merzouga is about 550 kilometres away, 9 to 10 hours of pure driving. With 15 to 16 days you see almost the whole country, from the imperial cities through the Sahara to the Atlantic.
2. Where is the best place to start?
Most tours start in Marrakech: it has many direct flights from Europe, and the desert is two driving days away. Casablanca works well for a route through Rabat, Meknes and Fes, and Tangier if you arrive by ferry from Spain or want to see Chefchaouen.
3. Which route suits a first trip?
Our classic is the 8-day imperial cities and desert tour: Marrakech, Rabat, Meknes and Volubilis, a full day in Fes, the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, the dunes of Merzouga and back along the Road of the Kasbahs. We compare all routes from 3 to 16 days in The most beautiful routes.
Cost and tips
4. How much does a private Morocco tour cost?
With us, from €389 per person for 3 days and from €1,729 per person for 16 days. That is about €100 to €145 per person per day. The longer the trip and the more people travel together, the less each day costs.
| Duration | Tour | Price per person |
|---|---|---|
| 3 days | Marrakech → Merzouga → Marrakech | from €389 |
| 4 days | Marrakech → Erg Chegaga | from €479 |
| 6 days | Oases and Sahara from Marrakech | from €749 |
| 8 days | Imperial cities and desert | from €829 |
| 15 days | The grand Morocco tour | from €1,679 |
Usually included: an air-conditioned 4x4 or minibus with fuel for your group only, your driver, nights in hotels, riads or kasbahs with breakfast and dinner, and in the Sahara a camel ride and a desert camp. More in How much does a Morocco tour cost?
5. What is not included?
Flights, lunches, drinks, tips and personal expenses. Plan some cash in dirham for lunches on the road and for tips. We recommend travel health and cancellation insurance.
6. How much do you tip in Morocco?
Tipping is common but voluntary. As a guide: about 10 percent in restaurants, 100 to 200 dirham per day and group for local city guides, and about 100 dirham per travel day for the whole group for your tour driver, at the end of the trip.
When to go
7. When is the best time to travel?
March to May and September to November. The days are warm but not hot, and the nights in the Sahara are pleasant. In July and August the medinas get very hot during the day. From December to February it is sunny and quiet, but the nights in the desert and the Atlas are cold and there can be snow on the passes. Month by month in Best time to visit Morocco.
8. Can you go to the desert in summer or winter?
Yes. In summer the Sahara is very hot, so excursions take place early in the morning and late in the evening. In winter the days are mild, but from November to February the nights can drop to near freezing. The tents have thick blankets, but bring a warm jacket.
Private, group or rental car
9. Private tour or group tour?
Private means only you and your companions are in the vehicle. You set the pace, the breaks and the photo stops, and the route can be adjusted beforehand and often on the way. Group tours have fixed dates and a fixed programme. On a private tour the vehicle and driver are shared by everyone in your group: four people each pay less than two.
10. Rental car or private driver?
Both are possible. With a driver the long distances are relaxed: from Marrakech to Merzouga it is about 550 kilometres, which we split over two days. You do not have to worry about roads and accommodation, and your driver knows the routes, places and people. Off-road trips in the desert are best done with experienced, registered local guides. 11. Which languages do the drivers speak?
Many of our guests come from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, so our drivers speak German. We plan trips in German, French and English. Our founder Mohammed Toulali lived in Germany for more than 24 years and plans your trip with you personally on WhatsApp.
Entry, money and safety
12. Do I need a visa?
Citizens of Germany, Austria and Switzerland do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days, and the same applies to many other countries, including the UK and the US. Your passport should still be valid for at least six months when you enter. Please check the current rules for your nationality before you travel.
13. How do you pay in Morocco?
The currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD); one euro is roughly 10 to 11 dirham. Officially, dirham may not be taken into or out of the country, so you exchange money on arrival. There are cash machines in all towns, but not in the desert or small villages. Cards work in larger hotels and shops; in souks and small restaurants you need cash.
14. Is Morocco safe for tourists?
Morocco is one of the most visited countries in Africa, and millions of travellers return every year without problems. The most common annoyances are not dangers but pickpockets in crowds, pushy sellers and fake guides. Check your government’s current travel advice before you go.
