Tangier → Merzouga → Marrakech
From the Mediterranean to the Sahara: Chefchaouen, Fes, the Ziz Gorge, a night in the dunes and Ait Ben Haddou.
Price on request
Erg Chegaga is the wilder sister of Merzouga. The dunes lie beyond M’Hamid and can only be reached by 4x4 along about 60 kilometres of track. In return you are often almost alone with the wind and the starry sky.
On the way you drive through the Draa Valley, one of the longest palm oases in Morocco. The way back goes off-road across the dry Lake Iriki.
Over the Tichka pass to Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate. Then over the Tizi n’Tinififft pass into the Draa Valley to Agdz, with kasbahs and dense palm groves. Night in a kasbah.
Along the Draa Valley to Zagora and Tamegroute with its old Koranic library and green pottery. In M’Hamid you switch to the 4x4: 60 kilometres of track over plains with tamarisks and acacias to the dunes. At sunset you climb the great dune on foot. Dinner and night in camp.
After sunrise, off-road across the dry Lake Iriki, a huge flat plain, to the oasis of Foum Zguid. Then on tarmac to Ouarzazate. Night at the hotel.
Relaxed drive back over the High Atlas with stops at the best viewpoints. Arrival in Marrakech in the afternoon.
