The short answer
The Agafay desert is a stone and hill desert, only about 40 minutes from Marrakech. It is ideal for an afternoon with a camel ride, sunset and dinner. There are no sand dunes.
The Sahara at Merzouga is what most people picture when they think “desert”: the high orange dunes of Erg Chebbi, a camel ride into the sunset and a night in a desert camp. It is about 550 kilometres from Marrakech, so you need at least 3 days.
In short: if you only have one evening, go to Agafay. If you want real dunes and a night under the stars, plan the Sahara.

Agafay: who is it for?
Agafay is perfect if you are spending a few days in Marrakech and want a taste of the desert for one evening. For families with young children, the short drive is a big plus.
For our Agafay experience we pick you up at your hotel in Marrakech. You ride a quad through the hills, take a camel ride of about an hour, drink mint tea in a Berber tent at sunset and have dinner at the camp with music and a show by the fire.
The Sahara at Merzouga: who is it for?
The Sahara is worth it for anyone who wants to experience the great dunes: sunset on a dune crest, dinner and music by the fire at the camp, and a starry sky you hardly see in Europe any more. In the morning the sun rises over the dunes.
The long drive is part of the experience: over the Tizi n’Tichka pass in the High Atlas, past Aït Ben Haddou and through the Dades or Todra gorge. Our shortest tour is the 3-day desert tour Marrakech – Merzouga, from €389 per person. For more peace and quiet, head to the dunes of Erg Chegaga.
Everything about the night in the dunes is in our article Merzouga desert tour and desert camp.
Can you combine both?
Yes, and that is often the best option. For example:
- One week: 2 days in Marrakech with an evening in Agafay, then the 3-day tour to Merzouga.
- 6 to 8 days: a tour with two nights in the Sahara and time for oases and gorges, such as Oases and Sahara in 6 days.
The best time to go
You can visit Agafay all year round. In summer it is very hot at midday, so tours run in the late afternoon and evening. For the Sahara, October to April is ideal. In summer it gets hotter than 40 degrees, in winter the nights are cold. More in our article Best time to visit Morocco.
Frequently asked questions
Are there sand dunes in the Agafay desert?
No. Agafay is a stone and hill desert. The high sand dunes are in the Sahara, for example at Erg Chebbi near Merzouga or at Erg Chegaga.
How far is Merzouga from Marrakech?
About 550 kilometres across the High Atlas, which is 9 to 10 hours of driving. That is why a desert tour to Merzouga takes at least 3 days.
Can you stay overnight in the Agafay desert?
Yes, there are camps with tents. But most visitors come for an afternoon and evening with sunset and dinner and then return to Marrakech.
Is the Sahara worth it with only 3 days?
Yes, if the dunes are your big wish. The drive is long, but on the way you see the Atlas, Aït Ben Haddou and the Dades or Todra gorge. With 6 days you travel at a more relaxed pace.
