Ait Ben Haddou, Dades and Todra Gorge: tips for your visit

Ait Ben Haddou in the evening light

Ait Ben Haddou at a glance

Ait Ben Haddou is a fortified mud-brick village, a ksar, on the Ounila river south of the High Atlas. In the past, caravans travelling between the Sahara and Marrakech passed through here. Since 1987 the ksar has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Houses and granaries cling to the hillside, and at the very top stands the old communal granary with a wide view over the valley.

Today only a few families still live in the old ksar. Most residents have moved to the new village across the river, where you also find the cafés and shops.

Getting there from Marrakech

From Marrakech it is about 190 kilometres over the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m), Morocco’s highest mountain road. With photo stops the drive takes about 4 hours. A detour to the kasbah of Telouet on the way is worth it. Ouarzazate, the “gateway to the desert”, is only about 30 kilometres further.

A day trip from Marrakech is possible but long. It is nicer to visit Ait Ben Haddou on the way to the desert and then stay overnight in Ouarzazate, Skoura or the Dades Valley.
